Your diet, your exercise, your sleep, how you think, and how you just be in the world are all areas that need your attention in your way of wellness.
Healthy Lifestyle
Lifestyle Medicine is a branch of medicine that focuses on the development of a healthy way of life, such as nutrition, physical activity, stress management, sleep, avaoiding toxic substances, and keeping social connections to prevent and treat chronic diseases like obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. Whether you want to lose weight, have more energy, prevent or manage chronic diseases, quit smoking, or create clarity of your mind and motivated action, the adage, "Food is Medicine" applies. Exercise and proper sleep are also medicine. You and I will collaborate to develop personalized and sustainable plans and accountability to help you achieve your wellness goals leading to improved overall health and well-being. Your own body supports you in your personal transformation.
When fulfilling your good intentions, having a growth mindset is essential. This means being open to learning and to the work it takes to improve yourself. It is a willingness to change. Even after a real and sincere breakthrough, if you don't put new and effective habits in place to sustain your transformation, you are left only with great inspiration. As you get older, you can become attached to your old habits, making them more challenging to change, even habits that are killing you. "I'm too old to change" is a mindset habit that limits you. In our coaching sessions, we will collaborate so that you can experience breakthroughs and develop new and healthy habits that are worth living and being supported by.
Mindfulness
Mindfulness is the practice of training our minds to be fully present in the moment and see things as they are. In mindfulness, we become more conscious of our actions, behaviors, and habits as they actually take place in the present, non-judgmentally, thereby allowing change for the good to take place without force. The practice of mindful awareness of our thoughts, our feelings, and our body sensations is the access to self-healing. Being mindfully aware of the changes happening around us and within us creates the flexibility of our mind that allows us to navigate our inner and outer worlds. By incorporating mindful awareness practices into our daily routines, we can manage pain, reduce stress, improve focus and sleep, change habits, and generally make better lifestyle choices. Mindfulness also helps us to develop compassion and empathy toward ourselves and others making it essential to successful relationships in life.
My own personal journey towards wellness started with a profound and challenging experience - my son's struggle with drug addiction. Like many parents, I spent years in denial, unaware of the extent to which I was avoiding reality. They say denial is like sleep; you don't realize you're in it until you wake up.
Fortunately, through the guidance of some smart coaches and a transformative 12-step recovery program, I discovered a path to serenity and personal empowerment. Although the source of my trauma didn't vanish overnight, I learned healthy detachment and began working on myself, both in terms of my mindset and my physical health.
By making my own wellness a priority and incorporating exercise, meditation, and dietary changes into my life, I not only shed 40 pounds and freed myself from blood pressure and cholesterol medications in spite of my genetic disposition to heart disease, but I also rediscovered the sheer joy and purpose in my existence. While our son has successfully overcome his battle with drugs, that initial trauma became the catalyst for a profound transformation of my body, heart, and mind.
I am in my mid-seventies. I'm still on a journey of self-discovery and am continuously seeking ways to contribute to the world around me. Drawing upon my extensive experience as an educator and work within the field of human services, I'm grateful to employ the valuable coaching skills that I've cultivated throughout my career.
As a certified health coach through the esteemed Dr. Sears Wellness Institute, a graduate of Landmark Worldwide, a member of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine, and a devoted meditation practitioner, I bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to my training classes and our coaching sessions.
